Santo Domingo, RD.
The National Police continues without explaining the circumstances in which Joel Díaz and Elizabeth Muñoz were murdered, a married couple who were screened on the Duarte Highway, near Vila Altagracia, when they returned to Santo Domingo.
The police version is that they allegedly confused the white Kia vehicle with one they were chasing.
So far the police have not said exactly who they were chasing and the reasons why they shot until they screened the husbands, without intervening even words.
In the case, six agents of the National Police who were part of the police patrol that killed the couple were captured. They will have to appear on Wednesday before the court of permanent attention of Vila Altagracia for the knowledge of their measure of coercion.
This patrol was made up of the second lieutenant Victorino Reis Navarro, The sergeant Sunday Perdomo Reis, The bosses Norkys Rodríguez Jiménez and Àngel dels Sants, As well as shallows Anthony Castro Pérez and Juan Manuel Ogando Solís.
Also involved in the case is Colonel César Martínez Lora, commander of the Vila Altagracia operation, who was suspended until the site investigations are carried out. He is not, however, among those charged with the murder.
About Martínez Lora it has been published that he worked for the National Directorate of Drug Control and was fired for allegedly “hiding the drug he confiscated and then negotiating it” when he was acting as inspector of the DNCD in Higuey.
Police remain unconfirmed with this information, as has Interior and Police Minister Jesus Vásquez Martinez, who was asked several times over the weekend without offering answers.
National Police spokesman Miguel Balbuena said they were in the middle of an investigation into the case and that at the appropriate time they would explain who the police were looking for when they killed Joel and Elizabeth.
Interior and Police said on Thursday (April 1st) that it had set up an external commission “to carry out a real and effective purge of the institution to separate staff who do not meet the ethical, moral and appropriate training profile”.
The entity, however, did not provide details of who would make up this external commission or what its work would be like.
The husbands were buried on the afternoon of Friday, April 2 amid widespread displays of grief and dismay from Dominican society.
These were two shepherds who participated in an evangelical campaign in Vila Altagracia. They resided in the Costa Linda sector, in Sabana Perdida de Sant Domingo Nord. They were only two months married.
