North Carolina authorities say Pennsylvania woman has died after being shot in a rabies incident on Interstate 95
LUMBERTON, NC – North Carolina authorities say a Pennsylvania woman died after being shot in a rabies incident on Interstate 95 while she and her husband were driving on the beach.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that authorities were still searching for the killer after Thursday’s shooting.
The shooter was driving a 2010 silver or gray Chevy Malibu or Impala model with tinted windows.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the woman who died was Julie Eberly, 47, of Manheim, Pennsylvania. Her husband, Ryan Eberly, was not injured.
Authorities said the couple’s vehicle unknowingly approached the shooter’s vehicle while it was merging into another lane.
“The suspect went down the window and fired several shots at the passenger door, one of which hit Julie Eberly,” the statement said.
The car he was going was heading south, north of Lumberton. The city is located south of Fayetteville and near the South Carolina State Line.
Julie Eberly was taken to a hospital, where she died.
“It was an innocent Pennsylvania family heading to the beach for a vacation,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said. “Fortunately, they had left their six children at home with their grandparents, but now these children have to live with the thought of their mother’s murder … in such a cowardly and foolish way.”
The sheriff’s office said Friday morning in a Facebook post that hundreds of people have contacted the office that wanted to help the family.
