“We have seen reports that the Taliban, contrary to their public statements and commitments to our government, are blocking Afghans who want to leave the country to get to the airport,” Sherman told reporters.
In a phone call with lawmakers Friday, Austin said he was “aware” that Afghans and Americans trying to get to the airport “have been harassed or even beaten by the Taliban.”
Biden’s statements, however, suggested the opposite in relation to Americans trying to get to Kabul airport, saying they “have no indication that they were unable to get to Kabul through the airport.”
“We have reached an agreement with the Taliban. So far they have been allowed to pass. It is in their interest that they go through this. Therefore, we do not know of any circumstances in which American citizens (who carry an American passport) attempt to arrive at the airport, ”Biden said.
However, Pompeo argued that he heard “nothing” from Biden that would frighten the Taliban or make them fear any kind of U.S. retribution, including for his role in the difficulty for Americans to reach the Kabul airport.
