Switch’s release schedule might be looking a little light at the moment, but it would be fair to assume that there are ongoing projects that have not yet been announced, and we’ve probably had confirmation of this assumption by Christophe Gandon , CEO of Games at Virtuos, the studio responsible for impressive third-party Switch ports such as Dark Souls, Starlink and LA Noire, among others.
Speaking of the news that the Switch has surpassed the 3DS to claim the honor of being Nintendo’s fifth best-selling console of all time, Gandon said:
2021 has begun with the continued rise of the Nintendo Switch as it surpasses 3DS lifetime sales. There are many reasons for its success, including fantastic first-party games and a clever design that finally crosses the hand / console division. However, what really makes the Switch stand out is its strong third-party support. Investing in the Switch ecosystem no longer means losing some of the world’s largest IPs, with franchises like Bioshock and XCOM in the same content library as Mario and Zelda. This can be attributed to Nintendo’s new approach to working with third parties and its desire to make the Switch a welcoming home for developers of all shapes and sizes. We’ve been able to make good use of Nintendo’s toolkits to make the games look good and work with their hardware, and we’re excited about new projects on the horizon this summer and beyond. There is so much more to come from the Switch family.
Gandon is clearly suggesting that Virtuos has irons on fire for 2021, but his use of the phrase “Switch family” is also interesting. Could it imply that we will get new Switch hardware in the near future, as has been much rumored for quite some time (despite Nintendo’s efforts to ignore them)? Or maybe it just means Switch and Switch Lite?
