Pregnant woman climbs on SUV window on rooftop while trapped on flooded Southfield freeway

DETROIT – A pregnant woman was forced to climb through the window of the submerged SUV and sit on the roof after being trapped in a flooded stretch of Southfield Highway.

“I was coming on the freeway and I saw there was a puddle, but it didn’t seem too big for me to pass,” Angel Johnson said. “Once I passed, my car started to turn and it had stopped and left me right here.”

Johnson got stuck on the freeway below Tireman Avenue Detroit and had to sit on top of the SUV while waiting for firefighters to arrive.

“I’m still shaking,” Johnson said. “But I’m glad I didn’t get stuck (inside the SUV).”

Johnson is two months pregnant. He said water started getting into the SUV, so he had to get up.

Announcements

“I got in the car and waited for the ambulance to arrive,” Johnson said. “I had to make sure my window was all the way down so I could get out.”

The Southfield Highway is just one of several freeways which flooded Friday when heavy rains passed through Metro Detroit. It closed in several places, including Ford Road and Joy Road.

The Lodge Highway, I-94 and I-96 also had to be closed at certain points due to flooding.
