Five years later The death of the prince, the artist ‘s estate releases songs from his unreleased album, “Welcome 2 America”. The new music will premiere Sunday night in 60 minutes.
Prince he wrote and recorded the album before embarking on his 2010 “Welcome 2 America” tour, but did not perform songs. He never said why, longtime Prince keyboardist Morris Hayes told 60-minute correspondent Jon Wertheim.
“And I remember asking him about it. And he said, ‘Well, we’ll just have to check it out again.’ Because I was involved in the next project, ”Hayes said.
The 60-minute cameras went to Prince’s Paisley Park Studios, outside Minneapolis, for the report. That’s where Prince kept a round of unreleased music, up to eight thousand songs according to an estimate.
Prince died of an accidental overdose of painkillers in 2016 with no spouse, no children and no will. Her sister and five step-sisters have been named heirs, but after five years, they are locked in a legal dispute over the estate. Meanwhile, the bank overseeing the estate called on Troy Carter, a one-time Lady Gaga manager and Spotify executive, to sort out the music collection and unlock its value.
A team of archivists works full time listening to music and proposing novelties. The estate has kept pace with Prince, releasing about an album a year since his death, a mix of reissues and freshly extracted gems. “Welcome 2 America” is the latest.
The report and unpublished music will be broadcast for 60 minutes on Sunday at 7 pm ET / PT on CBS.
