Let’s not go halfway: WiLD looked amazing. The ambitious open worlder directed by Michel Ancel and his Wild Sheep Studio was announced as exclusive to PlayStation 4 eons ago, but with maker Rayman retiring from gaming and seemingly stalled development for an entire generation, the truth is that it no longer exists.
First, let’s get to the source: the rumor is courtesy of Venture Beat speaking writer Jeff Grubb, who speaks as part of his latest Giant Bomb podcast. Currently, the video is behind a pay wall, but VGC cites the alleged industry member who claims the game is “dead.” He said: “The project was closed. The team that was working on it was perhaps looking to try to stay together and work on other projects ”.
The game was first announced at Gamescom in 2014, where it won our Game of the Show award, according to Vote. A fascinating gameplay demonstration, including a giant naked snake, was followed a year later at Paris Games Week, but updates have been scarce since then. This always seemed expensive and ambitious, so without Ancel’s vision, it’s hardly a surprise to know that the project may have been rejected.
We will try to follow up with Sony to see if we can get confirmation of the status of the project and update if we get a response.
