PS5 PlayStation 5 Sony 1

Sony has said it will unlock access to the PlayStation 5’s M.2 slot later this summer as it allows gamers to upgrade their console’s system storage with an additional NVMe SSD. But what if you try to install one right now? According to Digital Foundry, which tested the feature, your console won’t even do it boot with a lost SSD inside.

Obviously, this makes sense, as the system does not yet officially support the feature, but we are a little surprised by how long PlayStation has stopped using. For now, you’ll need to settle for an external hard drive, though it’s worth noting that you can now download the PS5 software to a USB hard drive for secure storage.

While it’s good news that you’ll soon be able to significantly increase the storage space on your PS5, it’s worth noting that the drives that are expected to be compatible are very expensive. Currently, the platform owner has not yet announced which SSDs will be compatible with the console, but we are confident that we will receive more news on this front in the near future.
