The Biden administration is in the process of reviewing former President Donald Trump’s so-called trade deal with China along with other U.S. positions toward Beijing, the White House press secretary said Friday , Jen Psaki.
“Everything the former administration has established is in the process of being reviewed,” Psaki said in response to questions about whether President Joe Biden believes the Trump deal is still in place.
The trade deal Trump signed a year ago was one of his proudest achievements until the new coronavirus spread from China to the United States. After that, then-presidential candidate Biden was able to launch the deal as a sign that Trump was too focused on his own political achievements. , even though the world was on the brink of a deadly pandemic.
Under the agreement, Beijing agreed to scale purchases of U.S. agricultural products and other products in exchange for relief from U.S. tariffs. Psaki did not answer any questions about whether the US still expects China to meet its commitments under the agreement.
“We are focused on approaching this relationship from a position of strength and that means coordinating and communicating with our allies and partners on how we will work with China,” he said. “It means strengthening our economy at home and it means determining the best way forward to address a number of issues, not just economic, but strategic and also security.”
Asked again if the deal was still in place, she added, “It wouldn’t mean things were moving forward.” The administration “coordinates with our allies, members of Congress and makes a determination before continuing.”
Biden is not known to have spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping since he took office earlier this month.
