Queen Noor, mother of jailed Jordanian Prince Hamzah, blames “evil slander” on son’s arrest

Queen Noor, the American mother of former Crown Prince Hamzah of Jordan, has denounced a “perverse slander” against her son, who she says is under house arrest. Noor tweeted, “Praying for truth and justice to prevail for all the innocent victims of this evil slander. God bless and protect them.” The former Crown Prince said in a video broadcast on the BBC that he was under house arrest and that several of his friends had been arrested and that his security details had been removed. The Jordanian army said Hamzah, who now has no official role in the kingdom, was asked to stop “some activities that could be used to shake Jordan’s stability and security.” Jordanian official Ayman Safadi told reporters on Sunday that Hamzah had collaborated with influential national and foreign figures “as to the most appropriate time to begin steps to shake the security of our challenging Jordan.”

The army has denied the arrest of the former crown prince, who was accused of criticizing Jordan’s king, King Abdullah II, and has said the kingdom is “hampered by corruption, nepotism and bad government.” . Meanwhile, Jordan’s allied critics in the Gulf region have sided with Jordan’s actions and expressed support for the king.
