Rafael Inclán, from the molds to Ripstein

Rafael Inclán is an important part of national cinema, Theater and television, although he never really wanted to be an actor. His passion was bulls and horses. It was his rebellion and lack of money that caused him to enter the world of entertainment and go from being the Mofles to working with Arturo Ripstein.

“It was vague. My brothers did study,” he admits in his characteristic sly tone. “I wanted to fight or be a rejoneador, but getting together for a horse was impossible and in this search I lost a lot of time, I got married very young. My mother, more than my friend, was my enemy at that time and she went get to a point where he told me that since I didn’t want to study, at least I was out of acting, ”

Today is his 80th birthday. He is one of the most remembered exponents of the so-called file cinema next Alfonso Zayas, Luis d’Alba and the Red horse. Unlike these, he knew how to make a leap into a “more serious” cinema, as he defines it. “Any of my teammates could have made the leap, some tried and it didn’t work out, it also has to do with humility, maybe in the cinema of files we were the stars and in the other we weren’t going to be,” he says.

Intuition has helped him throughout his life. This one that caused him to play other roles before the cinema of files became extinct: “The genre was exhausted because it was abused, it was exceeded, both producers and actors and even the public. I had a certain smell to get ahead of what was being sold, I knew this movie was going to end and I tried to make the leap before it happened. “

For years, it has been said that such productions meant one of the darkest times in the industry. He refuses to believe it, he says it represents a stage in Mexico where it was what the public was asking for.

“They always say it hurt national cinema, but I ask: Did the Almada brothers hurt it too? The Indian Maria films? The Cantinflas ones? They were genres that sold a lot, it was fun. All life there has been the comic, the attractive woman and a bad guy, in the files the villain was the godfather. They said it was strong content but now you see Acapulco shore and you realize that what we were doing was nothing compared to that “What they don’t understand is that the files weren’t prostitutes.”

Making the leap to “serious cinema” was not so simple, but a struggle that took him a decade. Remembering this moment, Inclán confesses that at first he was scared, as he did not know if it would work on him or if the directors would bet on his work.

“I had uncertainty. I said that they worked less because in the film of files we work daily. That of working with Ripstein was my insistence, I was looking for him 10 years, he directed a soap opera in Televisiona because cults also need to pay rent. I was in this soap opera but it never stripped me. One day in Madrid, watching a zarzuela, my son and I met him in the middle. I walked over and told him that if I didn’t have a paper for a comic file and he said, ‘maybe’ ”.

Months later, Ripstein came to one of his shootings and gave him a role, which Inclán turned down because his contracts prevented it.

“I found myself in a park 10 years later. He was scouting and I threw myself at him. I told him I no longer had contracts, that I was no longer the Mofles and I didn’t have a protagonist’s chair, that he would give me a job.”

This led to the feature films The Gospel of Wonders (1998), The Colonel Has No One to Write to Him (1999) and The Loss of Men (2000), a film that won the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Festival. To this prize also the Ariel was added to him that gained to Better Actor in 2004 by its paper in the Nicotine tape.

Despite these recognitions, Inclán believes that part of his validity is based on humility, as he has never been considered a prodigy of histrionics. “I wasn’t a child prodigy or anything like that, despite being an artistic family; when you’re not very smart, you get married young, you find yourself losing the other person’s life, then I had to fight hard because the entrepreneurs realized it worked. In my time it wasn’t the public who put you in, it was the employers. “

Inclán reaches the age of 80 in the melodrama What’s Happening to My Family ?, with a woman he has just married for two years and a bypass for 20 years. He says he’s never been able to count the years, the money, or the accolades and tributes, because he doesn’t believe much in them. The only thing he wants is to keep having calls and the affection of his people.
