Released on Nintendo Switch in 2019, Pokémon Sword and Shield are currently the latest entries in the main series of Pokémon games. Of course, many Sword and Shield players will have been with the franchise from the start, and while the new games are a lot of fun in their own way, nostalgia means the original Game Boy red and blue will always be pretty specials, too.
But what if you could somehow mix the two? Well, while it’s almost impossible for most of us, Japanese YouTube user ハ ヤ テ 京 雲 寺 has reinvented the new games in the style of the Game Boy classics. “I was listening to Sword & Shield ‘s BGM [and] I wanted to hear the Game Boy style. “Diu ハ ヤ テ 京 雲 寺.” I couldn’t find it when I looked for it, so I made it myself! “
Lots of work later, and the next video was born. After a short introduction and a quick reimagining of the opening of Red and Blue Pokémon, the video is immersed in Sword and Shield sites and songs, all designed in the Game Boy style. You’ll see places known as Wedgehurst and Motostoke, all accompanied by chiptune versions of the songs from the new titles. It’s an awesome thing.
Just over a month ago we also came across a great work by an artist named Pat Ackerman, who reinvented all the new Sword and Shield Pokémon in the form of a Game Boy style sprite. Maybe this is becoming a (very welcome) trend?
