Red Sox with two new cases of COVID-19, go 11 in just over a week

The COVID-19 roster continues to grow for the Boston Red Sox, and Sunday opener Nick Pivetta did so earlier in the day.

In addition, reserve Danny Santana also entered the roster on Sunday, meaning Boston has put 11 players on the roster in about a week.

Pivetta was supposed to face Cleveland at 1 pm ET at Fenway Park. Instead, the Red Sox called the right Kutter Crawford of Triple-A Worcester to effect the opening.

Pivetta, 28, has a 9-7 mark with 4.67 to 26 openings. Crawford, 25, is making his first major league appearance.

Santana is batting 168 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 35 games. The Red Sox called on gardener Franchy Be to take his place.

The Red Sox start the day in third place in the American League East, eight games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. But they are only half a game behind the Yankees, who own the first wildcard. Boston has a four-game lead over Seattle for the second wild card.
