Blink, and you might have missed the Reddit 2021 Super Bowl ad.
The social media website posted a 5-second ad that included a shout out to “underdogs,” in an apparent gesture at the recent Redditor-powered GameStop frenzy.
“Large play space is expensive, so we couldn’t buy any of it in full,” says the full-text ad.
“But we were inspired and decided to spend our marketing budget on 5 seconds of transmission time.”
He continued, “One thing we learned from our communities last week is that little ones can achieve almost anything when they come together around a common idea.”
It appears to have been a reference to WallStreetBets ’RedDit forum, whose members shook investors last week by raising the stakes of GameStop and other companies by challenging large hedge funds.
“Powerful things happen when people concentrate around something they really care about. And there is a place for that. It’s called Reddit, ”the site’s ad was called.
The unusual location caused several people to stop or rewind the game to read it.
“In case you missed the Reddit Super Bowl ad … it only lasted 5 seconds. I definitely paused to read it,” one person said. wrote on Twitter.
Another spectator he tweeted: “The reddit ad was great; I had to go back and read it.”
“Okay, this Reddit ad made us pause, go back and read it. The best marketing I’ve seen in a long time, ”one user said added.
Even Reddit seemed unsure that his message would pass.
“If you’re reading this, it means our bet paid off,” the ad began.
The company later responded to some Twitter users who posted the ad after it aired, including the writing:
While it wasn’t clear how much the website spent on the ad, a 30-second ad cost $ 5,500,000.
