Now there’s a high, if not likely, chance that Phillip Lindsay will leave the Denver Broncos this offseason.
In accordance with media reports, the Broncos made an original bid Monday (worth $ 2.133 billion for 2021) on the free agent restriction broker.
This means the team will have the right of first refusal if Lindsay signs an offer sheet with an outside suitor, but Denver will not receive any compensation if the sheet does not match. (Remember, the Broncos nearly lost CJ Anderson to the Dolphins in 2016 after opting not to feature him in the second round.)
Compare that to the $ 3,384 million second-round bid that, at best, would have gotten the Broncos a second-round draft pick or, at worst, secured Lindsay’s return next season. .

Lindsay, a two-yard 1,000-yarder and former Bowler pro, avoided a 2020 campaign that was statistically hurt and disappointing, in which the Colorado product picked up just 502 ground yards and a touchdown in 118 attempts (eight games). He added seven receptions for 28 yards, losing homework to veteran Melvin Gordon, who led the Broncos with 1,144 yard yards and 10 total points (nine runs).
But Lindsay became increasingly unhappy with her position (or lack thereof) in the organization, and publicly showed her discomfort on numerous occasions this offseason. The writing allegedly on the wall, hinted at a Denver divorce during a March 10 interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“What else can I do? What else can I show?” Lindsay responded when asked if she felt wanted.
Assuming Lindsay is a real problem, the Broncos will have to keep moving forward in the position with Gordon, who is still facing potential league discipline for his drunk driving arrest last October. (Gordon received the DUI charges).
The team has also hired Royce Freeman until 2021, though the Broncos are now likely to tackle the position in next month’s draft.
Lindsay’s contract ended a hectic Monday for the Broncos’ new general manager George Paton, who re-signed defensive end Shelby Harris, took on board corner Ronald Darby, rejected Kareem Jackson’s safety option and featured FRG defender Alexander Johnson and wide receiver Tim Patrick in the second tier of the second round.
