Look what he has shot in the city! Why, is the first trailer (finally) for the long-awaited Amazon fantasy television series The wheel of time. It’s later than we expected, as the show will premiere on November 19, but was it worth the wait?
Based on the massive fantastic series of 15 books by Robert Jordan (the last of which were co-written by author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s death in 2007), The wheel of time serves as a “connective tissue between lord of the Rings i Game of Thrones“, As a showrunner Rafe Judkins put it on at the San Diego Comic-Con. We have been anxiously awaiting the trailer after a few a lot little teasing and the first images just published earlier this month. Well, what are you waiting for? Give him a watch!
The trailer delves into the bare bones of The wheel of time giant and extensive tale: in a fantasy world where only women named Aes Sedai are allowed to use magic, the powerful wizard Moiraine (played by Rosamund Pike) meets three boys and two girls: Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherfort), Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robins), Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden) – one of which he suspects could be the reincarnation of the legendary Dragon, an entity so powerful that it could destroy the world.
If you are a book lover, you are likely to immediately notice a discrepancy in the program. Originally, only the three male characters were seen as candidates to be the Reborn Dragon with magic, as a kind of yin to yang of the Aes Sedai. But the official synopsis makes it sound like Nyneave and Egwene are also candidates: “Set in an extensive epic world and where there is magic and only permission to access some women, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the one an incredibly powerful female organization called Aes Sedai, when she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers, where she embarks on a dangerous journey that spans the world with five young men and women, one of whom prophesies as the Reborn Dragon, who will save or destroy the humanity “.
The trailer also leans heavily towards the Aes Sedai as fully virtuous protectors of the world. In the books, while the Aes Sedai certainly saw themselves as protectors of the world, they were in fact insensitive, supercilious, and often misandric. I’m not saying they have to be perfect angels in the TV series, but let’s just say Jordan’s portrayal of female characters left a lot of room for improvement, which we hope the show has taken advantage of. As for the look of the show, the clips are so short that it’s hard to make a good read of them. The bright colors are wonderful and the CG looks great, but some of the sets … well, to me they look a lot like studio sets, unlike the beautiful location scenes Game of Thrones. Still, it’s worth remembering that Amazon liked what it looks like The wheel of time so much so that it is it was already shooting a second season.
