the Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente, Pelotero’s name was written to posterity for the way he died in a management aid to his neighbor, is one of 250 figures who will be honored with a statue in the National Garden of American Heroes, project commissioned by the outgoing President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
In an executive order dated Monday, January 18, Trump reviewed the intent of the project, the original idea dated earlier, July 3, 2020.
As stated by Trump himself in the recent executive order, “Throughout this nation, faith in the greatness and goodness of the United States has been attacked in recent months and years by a dangerous anti-American extremism that seeks to dismantle the history, institutions, and identity of our country.”
The president mentioned several incidents of vandalism that occurred against monuments, and explained that the National Garden is one of the ways to respond to these acts.
“In Executive Order 13934 of July 3, 2020 (Construction and Reconstruction of Monuments to American Heroes), I established the U.S. policy of establishing a statue park called the National Garden of American Heroes ( To begin the process of building this new monument to the greatness of our country, I established the interagency working group for the construction and reconstruction of monuments to American heroes (Working Group) and ordered to its members who planned the construction of the National Garden.The Working Group has informed me that it has completed the first phase of its work and is ready to proceed.This order revises Executive Order 13934 and provides additional instructions for in the Working Group “, reads part of the document published by the White House on its official website.
Among the personalities who will feature a statue are jazz icon Louis Armstrong; one of the pioneers of the animation industry, writer and film producer Walt Disney; astronaut Neil Armstrong; American Red Cross founder Clara Barton; the philosopher, theologian, and preacher Jonathan Edwards; the scientist and inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell; also inventor Thomas Alva Edison; the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic by plane, Amelia Earhart; the scientific genius and philosopher Albert Einstein; business tycoon Henry Ford; singer, musician and actor Elvis Presley (the King of Rock and Roll); and singer and music producer Fran Sinatra; as well as multiples of past U.S. presidents, starting with the first, George Washington.
Clemente is not the only athlete to appear in the National Garden. Also in attendance will be Muhammad Ali, Herb Brooks, Jesse Owens, Kobe Bryant, Lou Gehrig, Vince Lombardi, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Jim Thorpe and Cy Young.

The group of figures to be recognized will have as the only Puerto Rican Clemente, who died when the plane he was traveling in fell into the sea carrying supplies to help those affected by the December 1972 earthquake in Nicaragua. The Boricua was the first Latin American player to reach 3,000 hits in Major League Baseball, and the first to be praised at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

The National Garden will feature a list of heroes who deserve honor, recognition and lasting tribute to the battles they won, the ideas that they defended, the diseases they healed, the lives they saved, the heights they reached and the hope they had. “
Part of the work of the group designated for this project is to identify the right place for the establishment of the National Garden, as read by the executive order.
“The Secretary of the Interior shall provide funds, as appropriate and in accordance with available allocations and applicable law, for the establishment and maintenance of the National Garden.”
