Rover Perseverance captures first ‘dust devil’ | video – Science – Life

CNET, the technology and science portal, reported that not long after the landing, NASA’s Perseverance rover used a microphone to hear the wind on Mars. Now he has also realized what this wind can do.

Tuesday, the Nasa he shared the Rover’s vision of a whirlwind of dust making its way through the Martian landscape.

The Perseverance team posted two GIFs on social media. One that shows a wider look and another that shows an enlarged view.

“It can be seen in the distance behind my robotic arm in this improved / processed view,” NASA wrote. “The dust devil moves from right to left and creates swirls of dust in his path.”

Mars is a notoriously dusty, windy place, making it the perfect setting for dust swirls, some of which can reach very high proportions.

The Rover’s viewpoint offers a ground-level perspective of the phenomenon, which can sometimes also be seen from orbit. Earlier this month, NASA he shared a snapshot of a whirlwind taken by his spaceship Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

This may mark the first sighting of the Devil’s vehicle’s dust devil, but it won’t be the last. NASA’s other Mars rover in operation, Curiosity, has seen its share of energetic vortices.

Dust demons are not only fun to watch, they can also be useful for robotic scouts. NASA has been waiting for a whirlwind to arrive to clean the dust-laden solar panels from its stationary Insight landing module.

Perseverance is just beginning its scientific mission, so we can expect more panoramic shots of the wild winds on Mars.
