Bloomberg released a story earlier this week about Nintendo’s plans to launch a new Switch model that would come equipped with a Samsung OLED display that would consume less and offer a higher contrast and possibly a faster response time. It is reportedly a 720-inch 720-inch panel resolution and will be able to support “4K HD graphics” when paired with TVs.
ResetEra user and well-known industry member NateDrake, who has been linked to several other Nintendo leaks in the past, has now expanded this story, stating that the new Switch unit will host some “select exclusives,” especially from third-party partners.
“There will be some select exclusives, especially from third-party partners. They may not be a large number, but I know at least one.”
In a separate publication, the same source said Nintendo’s plan was to position the device as a review.
“Nintendo’s plans are to position it as a revision. If you want, a premium model.”
If this rumored system comes with a little extra grunt, it would not be surprising to see third-party companies, in particular, wanting to deliver more technically demanding titles with which the current Switch would probably struggle. In fact, there are even some games in current models that could be used with a much needed performance boost.
As for Nintendo, if you think about the 3DS era, you’ll know that it created a handful of exclusive titles for the new Nintendo 3DS. One of the first was Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which certainly provided some additional sales for the company. Therefore, it would not be a surprise if a Switch revision followed a similar pattern.
So far, representatives from Nintendo and Samsung have declined to comment on the latest rumors, and the Nintendo president last month went so far as to say that the Japanese company had no plans to announce a new version of the Switch soon.
