The proposal passed the state senate on January 28th. He faces a final procedural vote Thursday that will likely not change the outcome and will be sent to the governor for signature. Republican Gov. Henry McMaster has promised to sign the measure as soon as possible.
The House voted 79-35 in favor of the bill afterwards almost all members of the Democratic group came out in protestst at a given time.
A few Democrats were left behind while Republicans ended up with more than 100 proposed amendments.
After holding a press conference to speak out against the bill, several others Democrats reiterated their opposition to the measure, which has been debated in the legislature numerous times over the past decade.
Subsequently, almost all members of the House attended the vote.
“You love the fetus in the womb. But when it is born, it is a different reactionSaid Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter of Orangeburg, the oldest member of the House at 29 years old.
Numerous Republican lawmakers voted in favor of the bill.
Rep. Melissa Lackey Oremus said many women have different feelings when they get pregnant, especially when they are not where they want to be in their lives.
“They do not deserve to die just because his mother made a bad choice almostT, ”May said.
The bill requires doctors to do ultrasounds to check it [preliminary signs of] a heartbeat in the fetus. If this pulse is detected, the abortion can only be performed if the pregnancy was caused by rape or incest or if the mother’s life is in danger.
About a dozen other states have passed similar or more restrictive abortion bans, which could take effect if the Supreme Court with three judges appointed by former Republican President Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, the court ruling of 1973 which supported abortion rights.
Demands will follow if the bill becomes law.
