MOSCOW: The Kremin says Russia will closely monitor the evolution of Afghanistan before making a decision on whether to recognize the Taliban government.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Moscow would observe the “future steps of the Taliban to ensure the order and security of the country’s citizens and provide security for Russian diplomats.”
Peskov stressed that Russia wants to see peace and stability in Afghanistan and hopes that they will strive to curb the flow of drugs from the country.
Moscow, which fought a ten-year war in Afghanistan that ended with the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, has returned to the diplomatic return as a mediator in recent years, reaching disputed Afghan factions, including the Taliban, although the group was added to the Russian list of terrorist organizations in 2003.
