LONDON – It has taken a while, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his election victory.
Putin sent a telegram to Biden to congratulate him, the Kremlin said on Tuesday: “In his telegram, Putin wished all the successes to the president-elect and expressed his confidence that Russia and the United States, which have a responsibility especially in terms of global security and stability, they can facilitate the resolution of many problems and challenges facing the world now despite disagreements, “the Kremlin noted.
“Russian-American cooperation, based on the principles of equality and mutual respect, would satisfy the interests of both nations and the entire international community,” Putin said, according to the Kremlin.
“For my part, I am ready for interaction and contacts with you,” Putin said in the statement.
Russia’s recognition of Biden’s victory comes after the Electoral College voted Monday to consolidate its victory over President Donald Trump in the hotly contested November election.
Although the Electoral College vote is usually a process after the presidential election, this time it was more important given Trump’s failed legal attempts to overturn election results and unfounded allegations of irregularities in the vote.
