Salvadoran surfing is in mourning. This Friday afternoon, national surfer Katherine Diaz died after being hit by lightning. The athlete was training, when the serious incident happened.

According to preliminary reports, the athlete was in her evening practices, prior to the storm that this afternoon fell on the national territory, and was hit by electric shock when she was coming out of the water.

Neither the Salvadoran Red Cross (SS headquarters) nor the Green Cross (SS) attended to the emergency, but confirmed that one person was treated at El Tunco beach, due to lightning from the rain. Spokesmen stated that private individuals who were present at the site attended to the incident, and assisted the surfer.

However, individuals reported that Diaz had been left alive, but when she was taken to a hospital she died on the way, as a result of the serious injuries she suffered.

The former president of the Salvadoran Surfing Federation (Fesasurf), Jaume Delgado, confirmed the news. “That’s right. Unfortunate,” he noted, without further details. Later, on his Facebook account, Delgado posted: “You enjoyed your dream and you were doing what you liked best. Those of us who knew you know that you leave a big void in our hearts. The President of India, Yamil Bukele, expressed his grief over the death of Diaz. On his twitter account, he posted: “I just found out about the death of Salvadoran surfer Katherine Diaz. I am very sorry for this death and I join the pain that weighs on her family. A hug of solidarity.”

He then added: “Our solidarity towards ‘Bamba’ and the surfing family. Peace for their soul.”

The national team was part of the group of athletes that make up the national team that was preparing for the ISA World Games, which will take place in May in the country, and will give 12 places for surfing for the Olympics of Tokyo 2021.

At the National Surf Circuit, Diaz was third in the Women’s Open category, after a second date in which she was first. His final score was 6.37. While she also competed in the Wings Tour 2020, also in the same division of the ladies.

The athlete, sister of José “Bamba” Díaz, former national surfer, judge and current president of Fesasurf, showed solidarity with the Salvadorans in June 2020, when many were left homeless and without food, the product of storm Amanda and of the Covid pandemic19. It was a hard time for her and “Bamba,” as they were mourning the death of her father, but they still helped those in need.

Katherine, who was 22, was part of the group of supportive and united surfers, to help her compatriots. She was also actively involved in the garbage collection campaign on the beaches, always in the coastal area of ​​La Libertad. Rest in peace, Katherine.
