SAINT ANTHONY – A drilling sergeant assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at San Antonio-Fort Joint Base Sam Houston has died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the JBSA.
Sergeant Jessica Mitchell, a 68E dental specialist, was pronounced dead at San Antonio University Hospital around 3 a.m. Friday, according to the JBSA.
Hospital staff notified the unit that Mitchell, who was on vacation leave at the time, was the victim of several gunshot wounds. It is unclear what happened that led to his death.
The San Antonio Police Department and the Army Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the situation.
Mitchell had been assigned to MEDCoE since August 2019. Prior to that job, she served at a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.
“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drilling Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences are expressed to his family and friends. We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family and their soldiers during this extremely difficult time, ”said General Dennis LeMaster, the Commander-in-Chief of MEDCoE.
