San Diego Padres rider Fernando Tatis Jr. has been classified on the ten-day injury list but will not need surgery after the last injury to his troubled left shoulder, general manager AJ Preller said Tuesday.
Tatis suffered the injury on Monday and left San Diego’s 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Fathers said Monday that Tatis had suffered a subluxation of the shoulder, which is a partial dislocation of the joint.
Preller said Tuesday that other exams showed a slight labrum tear consisting of a subluxation. He said the injury is “non-surgical.”
The Padres hope Tatis can return in just 10 days. Preller said the short point has the full range of motion and he wanted to be in training on Tuesday.
“Overall, for us I think it’s just safe, giving inflammation to the left shoulder and a bit of instability. [a] the opportunity to calm down, ”Preller said.
Parents manager Jayce Tingler told reporters after the Giants game that Tatis had experienced minor dislocations in the past, but said Monday’s incident was the biggest pain Tatis had ever seen. Tingler also said the irritating shoulder problem could have been bothering Tatis “more than we realize.”
Tatis crashed to the ground in pain after swinging and losing on a 2-2 throw from San Francisco’s Anthony DeSclafani in the third inning, leaving Petco Park silent. He left the field with the help of Tingler and a coach, rocking his left arm against his body.
Tatis also left a game in late spring training with discomfort in his left shoulder after playing in his back, but returned two days later. Tingler said then that Tatis had been dealing with discomfort in his left shoulder since his minor league days. Tatis later said he had had it from the rookie ball.
Tatis, 22, struggled during the first five games of this season, hitting just 0.167 and making five errors, though he hit a 465-foot home run Sunday in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. On February 22, he signed the longest contract in major league history: a 14-year, $ 340 million deal.
If Tatis is offside for an extended period, Tingler said San Diego’s “first option” on the short field would be rookie Ha-Seong Kim, who replaced Tatis on Monday. Jake Cronenworth, Jorge Mateo and Tucupita Marcano could also play on the short field.
