The San Diego Padres agree on a deal to acquire right-hander Joe Musgrove of the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Musgrove trade is pending medical reviews, by sources, and will send a large package of prospects to the pirates. Hudson Head, a well-regarded center fielder, is expected to be part of the group heading to Pittsburgh.
Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA in eight starts for the Pirates of the 2020 season reduced by a coronavirus pandemic.
Musgrove, the team’s Opening Day starter in 2020, will earn $ 4.45 million in 2021 after he and the Pirates agreed to a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.
He is 29-38 years old with an effectiveness of 4.33 over 108 appearances in five major league seasons, including 83 starters.
Musgrove is the third starting pitcher the Padres have acquired during the offseason. San Diego acquired Blake Snell on the left and Yu Darvish on the right in separate box office operations last month with the Tampa Bay and Chicago Cubs rays, respectively.
This is the second significant trade completed by the Pirates in Reconstruction, who traded first baseman Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals last month.
