A student in Italy has found a novel method to wear the Covid certificate after it was tattooed on his arm.

Andrea Colonnetta, 22, said she hadn’t considered it too early before getting her last tattoo, but decided on the current, practical choice after talking to tattoo artist Gabriele Pellerone.

“It’s definitely original, I like being different,” Colonnetta, from the southern city of Reggio Calabria, told the Corriere della Calabria newspaper.

The bottom of Colonnetta’s left arm now bears an array of black squares from the QR code of its official Italian green pass.

Permission proves coronavirus status: that you have been vaccinated, that you have recovered from the virus, or that you have tested negative in the last 48 hours.

An extension of the EU’s Covid digital certificate is required in Italy from 6 August to enter cinemas, museums and covered sports venues or to eat inside restaurants.

Colonnetta, who said she had received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine, said that while she has received a lot of attention on Instagram and TikTok, her parents were a little perplexed.

“Certainly, they encouraged me to be less impulsive and to think better about things …,” he told the newspaper.

But his new barcode works, he said: A video posted on TikTok by Pellerone shows a masked Colonnetta entering McDonald’s and raising his arm to take a picture of the tattoo.

A security guard is seen at the entrance scanning Colonnetta’s photo before the video ends abruptly, making it unclear whether Colonnetta finally got her Big Mac or not.
