DHAKA: School bells rang after a 543-day hiatus in Bangladesh on Sunday as tens of thousands of students returned to classes amid a facility in the country’s coronavirus situation and the vaccination program took hold Rhythm.
News channels aired images of students in school uniforms entering campuses with wide smiles, visible despite the masks. Many came to their classes many hours in advance, as the allusion among the students was palpable.
In many schools, teachers greeted their students with flowers and chocolates. Guardians were banned from entering campuses as a precaution against overcrowding and spreading the infection.
Education Minister Dipu Moni has warned against any lax application of security measures, while authorities said earlier that each class would only meet once a week initially, while schools must strictly maintain the health guidelines.
“If it looks like the infections were coming back, the government may decide to reintroduce online classes,” he told reporters after visiting a school in the capital’s Azimpur area.
Bangladesh closed schools on March 17, 2020 after the coronavirus began spreading to the country, which has one of the highest population densities in the world.
Authorities decided to reopen educational institutes after vaccinating nearly 97% of teachers and staff.
The reopening occurs as a daily death toll is achieved and positive cases have softened in recent weeks. Last week, 55 people died due to Covid-19. This compares compared to the end of July this year, when an average of 250 deaths per day were recorded.
To date, the coronavirus has killed 26,880 people in Bangladesh, along with more than 1.5 million cases, according to official data.
