The Rams lost their defensive coordinator to the Chargers and there could be more major changes. Los Angeles had just closed what was a successful season, winning a playoff game and advancing to the divisional round after failing in the previous year’s postseason. But if they want to get back to their old heights from the 2018 Super Bowl test, they will need much better production in the passing game.
Sean McVay he seems to understand it and has now raised many eyebrows at his last two press conferences by refusing to commit Jared Goff. At his post-game press conference immediately after the Rams’ loss to the Packers, McVay was asked if Goff is his quarterback and replied:Yes, right now he’s the quarterback“As we’ve often seen,“ right now ”can be something of a death kiss when talking on a coach.
On Sunday, at his mid-year availability, McVay still muddyed the waters. “I’m evaluating everything we do and that includes the QB position,“McVay said, adding”I am not prepared to make any assertions regarding NO starting position“, By Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Los Angeles has had the league’s highest total defense this season, the guns are good enough, the offensive line is solid and the coach is fantastic. As such, it’s fair to assume that the only way to increase his ceiling is for Goff to improve, because the defense will have a hard time playing better in 2021. The former first-team general team retreated this season, qualifying for the top of the league in interceptions despite being at the bottom in the average depth of the goal.
It looks like McVay is far from happy with his current depth chart, but his options are limited. Goff is hired during the 2024 season thanks to the big overtime he signed in September 2019 that is really just beginning to begin. There is no realistic way to cut it before next season with the implications of the dead cap.
No team will take on his contract in an operation, which seems to indicate that the only way to replace McVay would be to add some competition to the roster. It would be very difficult to fit another big contract alongside Goff, which would mean that the competition would probably have to come in the form of a cheaper veteran or a player with a rookie contract.
It will be a very interesting season in Los Angeles. Maybe GM The Snead, highlighted for his aggressiveness in recent years, he has one more trick up his sleeve.
