SEATTLE – The Seattle Seahawks added a piece to their pass-rush and recovered another Tuesday by agreeing deals with Kerry Hyder and Benson Mayowa.
Agent Erik Burkhardt told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Hyder’s deal is three years and $ 16.5 million, with an increase to $ 17.5 million with incentives.
Mayowa, who played in Seattle last season, returns to the Seahawks with a two-year deal that will likely include at least an additional year to cancel the salary cap, a source told ESPN’s Brady Henderson.
Both Hyder and Mayowa will turn 30 before next season begins.
Hyder peaked 8.5 sacks in 16 games with the San Francisco 49ers last season while playing with coordinator Robert Saleh, a disciple of Pete Carroll who runs a Seattle-like defense. The 49ers signed the 6-2, 270-pound Hyder in free agency last season for being a rotating player who lined up as an attack and final, but became a starter due to Nick Bosa’s injuries and Dee Ford and was that of the 49ers. more productive defensive line player while playing mostly on the edge.
Hyder had 8.0 sacks in 2016 with the Detroit Lions and has 18.5 since he entered the league as a free agent without recruiting outside of Texas Tech in 2014. He also played for the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.
Mayowa had six sacks, seven offense attacks, two forks and nine quarterback strokes in 13 games with the Seahawks last season, missing three games with an ankle injury. He made nine starts, but saw a slight drop in playing time when the Seahawks switched to Carlos Dunlap, who became his starter.
Mayowa’s Pass Rush winning percentage as a defender of 16.2% was 24th among the ranked players in the entire league and the best among Seahawks players. Hyder was 39th with 11.3%.
Mayowa had seven best career sacks in 2019 with the Raiders before meeting with the Seahawks last March with a $ 3.05 million one-year deal. After a slow start to their fast pass in 2020, the Seahawks recorded a maximum of 37 sacks in the league over the past ten weeks, with Mayowa scoring four during that period.
He began his career as a free agent without recruiting outside of Idaho in 2013, spending his debut season in Seattle. He has 26 sacks in 100 career games over eight NFL seasons and has also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.
Dunlap remains unsigned after his release from the Seahawks earlier this month, saving the team $ 14.1 million in maximum space.
Pass-rush was the Seahawks ’biggest remaining need as they entered the second week of free agency. Hyder and Mayowa join a group featuring LJ Collier, Rasheem Green, Alton Robinson and Darrell Taylor at the end with Jarran Reed and Poona Ford at the helm. Taylor, selected in the second round last year, began practicing at the end of the season, but did not play as a rookie due to a leg injury in college.
The Seahawks added a one-year layoff to contracts signed by Chris Carson and center Ethan Pocic last week, something the team had not previously done with general manager John Schneider and vice president of player administration Matt Thomas. This mechanism reduces the immediate burden of a player’s salary cap by apportioning the proportion of the signing bonus, but creates dead money along the way, so that it amounts to borrowing from the room limit in future years.
