The review aggregator site, Metacritic, has released the 2020 publisher ranking, which shows us which studies have released the strongest range of games based on their overall quality, at least according to critics.
Editors are classified according to a points system consisting of four main steps, which are detailed below. To qualify, a publisher must have published at least five titles throughout the year:
(1) Average average score of all games released in 2020
150 possible points (awarded at 1.5 x the average score value)(2)% of products rated with good reviews (Metascore of at least 75)
100 possible points (ex: 80% good = 80 points)(3)% of products rated with bad reviews (49 the lower; in this case, a lower% is better)
100 possible points (ex: 20% bad = 80 points)(4) Number of “great” titles (metal score of 90 or higher, min. 7 reviews)
5 bonus points are awarded for each different title with a score higher than 90
So on the list. Sega has reached the top position this year with a total score of 372.2 points, thanks in part to Royal May person i Yakuza 0 scoring above “90”, earning the editor bonus points as described in the fourth point above.
Nintendo reached the ninth place overall, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons its only game with more than 90 points. The company’s Metascore average decreased by five points from the previous year, leaving it below the order of bites of what we would normally see.
Last year, in the 2019 publisher ranking, Nintendo came in third.
