Serious warning issued to millions of Apple iPhone users

In recent months, iPhone owners have suffered a lot: new forms of security threats, hackers exploited around the world, the CSAM debacle (plus a delay) and the endless saga of App Store fraud. Now things got worse.

In a shocking new report, Vice has revealed that a next-generation version of the lethal O.MG cable aimed at Mac users has gone on sale, and now iPhones are in their sights. And it can hack you up to a mile away.

“It looks like a Lightning cable, it works like a Lightning cable … But it’s actually a malicious cable that can record everything I write, including passwords, and send this data wirelessly to a hacker who could be in addition to a mile away, ”Vice reports.

O.MG cables were created and marketed by a security researcher known as MG, and what he has incorporated into the new cables is extraordinary. When connected, the cables automatically create a WiFi hotspot for the hacker, an interface accessed by a normal web browser that allows the hacker to start recording keystrokes. The gen two cable also adds geofencing, which allows hackers to activate payloads on a device based on its physical location.

“It combines well with the self-destruct function if an O.MG cable leaves the scope of your commitment and you don’t want your payloads to be lost or accidentally run against random computers,” MG explained to Vice. “We tested it in downtown Oakland and they were able to cause payloads over a mile.”

MG also confirmed that the cables have successfully hacked USB-C: “There were people who said that type C cables were protected from this type of implant because there is not enough space. clearly, I had to prove I was wrong, ”MG said. The combination of USB-C to Lightning O.MG cables makes iPhones an important goal.

Vice reports that Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the new OMG cables. I have also contacted Apple and will update this report when / if I receive a response.

The new O.MG cables are already on sale for $ 140 at Hak5, so think long and hard before borrowing the charging cable from a stranger. Honestly, Apple’s Portless iPhone may not arrive soon enough.
