Shooting in Chicago: 6 shots on New Year’s Eve

Six people were shot in Chicago on the last day of 2020, including a critically injured teenager in Brainerd, on the south side.

The 16-year-old was standing on the sidewalk Tuesday around 2:25 p.m. on Block 9400 on South Ashland Avenue when a man approached him, Chicago police said. The male pulled out a firearm and shot her in the chest and abdomen.

The teen was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.

The latest shooting of the year injured a 29-year-old man in Austin, on the West Side.

He was a passenger in a vehicle around 9:18 p.m. on Block 200 on South Lavergne Avenue when someone in a passing black SUV fired shots, police said. The man received three shots in the leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

In the early afternoon, a man was shot in Burnside, on the south side.

The 32-year-old was traveling in a vehicle around 2 p.m. in block 700 of East 92nd Place when he heard gunshots and felt pain, police said. The man received a blow to the hand and hip and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

Another man was shot in Austin during an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon.

The 20-year-old man was walking down the sidewalk around 12:30 a.m. on the 200 block of South Lotus Avenue when two men approached him and asked for goods, according to police.

One of the men opened fire and hit the man in the leg, police said. He was taken to Loretto Hospital, where he appears in good condition.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a man was seriously injured after being shot in West Woodlawn, on the south side.

The 22-year-old man was out at 9:30 a.m. when he was shot at 6100 block of South Vernon Avenue, police said. The man was beaten in the back and torso and taken to the University of Chicago Medical in critical condition.

No witnesses to the shooting were known and circumstances were not immediately known, police said.

The first shooting on New Year’s Eve left a man injured in West Pullman, at the southern end of the area.

The 44-year-old man was arguing with another man around 1:05 a.m. on block 11700 South Sangamon Street when the male pulled out a gun and shot him, police said.

The man was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with two gunshot wounds to his leg, police said. His condition stabilized.

Tuesday’s shootings follow a Monday in which seven people were shot, one of them deadly.
