Snow piled up on subway tracks traps pilots for more than an hour

The Straphangers were trapped on a Q train for nearly 90 minutes Monday afternoon due to snow on Brooklyn subway tracks, a pilot told The Post.

“It’s been an hour and 20 minutes since we sat between Parkside and Prospect Park. There is no heat on the train, there are 3 people not wearing masks, there is no ventilation at all, ”said train pilot Q Rachel Turner shortly after 3.30pm.

“About 30 minutes ago we were told that the snow had accumulated too much to move forward and that we had obtained permission to go back to Parkside to go down, but no one has known anything since.”

Traffic officials confirmed the interruption of service, which stopped the last Q train scheduled to cross the Manhattan Bridge before the subways were closed, on Twitter, saying they needed to clear the “accumulated snow.”

The train lost power briefly during the wait, the MTA confirmed, leaving Turner and others cold. The train and its passengers were eventually redirected to the Parkside Avenue station, Turner said.

He finally got off the train at 3:38 p.m.

With the subway out of service as of 2 p.m., Turner walked 0.6 miles to access the train closest to Manhattan.

An MTA spokesman later blamed the delay on “the team blocking the snow on the tracks.” An investigation was continued.

“This was an isolated incident on an exceptionally severe weather day and we apologize to our customers for what was a frustrating and baffling delay,” MTA representative Shams Tarek said in a statement.

“Preliminary findings indicate that during the incident energy was lost for part of the time, which was related to the equipment obstructing the snow on the tracks.”
