Soapbox: Compatibility with the previous version of PS5 has kept me hooked to my next generation console

PS5 PlayStation 5 1

As for the launch of the next-generation console, I think the PlayStation 5 is the best in history. Between first-hand titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, and key multiformat releases like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, there’s been plenty to play for. But all systems face a harsh and cold reality six weeks after launch: its fledgling library simply can’t compete with the next decade of content hosted by its predecessor.

I remember this being particularly true with the PlayStation 4 for a terrifying time. Once I finished Killzone: Shadow Fall, I went back to PlayStation 3 for what seemed like an eternity. I ended up playing dozens of games on the latest generation device, including some new ones like Gran Turismo 6. In fact, it wasn’t until 2015 that I actually switched to the PS4.

But with the PS5, there’s no danger of that happening. While they are bony and need an iteration, I greatly prefer Sony’s next-generation console ecosystem, and compatibility with previous versions means I never need to leave it as I did with my PS4 almost a year ago. decade. I’ve already won major PS5 titles, including Sackboy: A Big Adventure, but every day I’m playing my new system for hours and hours. For now, you literally have to rip me off.

Now, part of that depends on my personal circumstances – I’ve been lucky enough to have a little more time to play lately and the blockage has only increased my sessions, but I really also have a great time digging into the library. . I went back to Days Gone recently to remove my Platinum Trophy, and it seemed like a different game running at 60 frames per second on Sony’s new system; I am currently revisiting Hitman 2 ahead of its successor.

It’s disappointing that not all system titles have been improved: Final Fantasy VII Remake, a title I recently won, would have been dreamy at 60 frames per second, but I love that I can install the game on my PS5 and enjoy it with the sleekest, fastest operating system Sony has ever created. I’m planning to take Death Stranding out of embarrassment soon, and the fact that I don’t have to keep my PS4 connected is a gift from God.

Now obviously a console has to support its own strengths and the PS5 native library looks set to grow a lot this year. But we are in a period of transition, it is good to admit and compatibility with previous versions has completely transformed my relationship with the new Sony console. When I spent part of the first 12 months of the PS4 with my PS3, I was thrilled to play PS4 games on my PS5. It’s comfortable and fun and I hope that from now on all PlayStation platforms will be compatible with later versions.
