Soapbox: I wasn’t going to play Monster Hunter Rise, but the art of the game is too pretty

Do you know those friends with whom you communicate completely through gifs and TikTok links? Well, last week, my best friend sent me this:

I’ve only ever played one Monster Hunter game, and it was Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on 3DS. I was enjoying it, for the most part, I played with a few friends with a lot more experience than me and they helped me bring down some of the trickier monsters. He also had a sweet Poogie with me to do everything right with his TINY LITTLE BEE COSTUME. Honestly, how come there isn’t a game about Poogie? I just kill monsters to keep my boy in new clothes.

Again, there were costumes for me too – the amazing sets I would make of the different monsters I cut into the prey. Despite being closed with the genre, so sometimes my friends put on fantastic armor and got a terrible bikini or sometimes I got something rad, and they got, like a teddy bear dress, the dresses they were my second favorite part of the game. After Poogie, obviously.

And then I faced the Gore Magala, a hard purple wyvern thing that I hope is in hell right now. I faced Gore Magala about five times before giving up and selling the game. I’m sorry, Poogie. I failed you.

So I wasn’t too interested in Monster Hunter Rise, as I had constantly ignored the latest MH games. I prefer my wrists and fingers intact, thank you, and Monster Hunter isn’t exactly known to let players take the easier exit.

But Capcom continues to publish these beautiful little works of art that remind me of the reasons why do like the Monster Hunter games. There is a lot of humor, sweetness and light among all the dragons that kill and grind eggs. And yes, my wrists won’t thank me, especially if I pick a weapon as complicated as the Sword Insect again, but I’ll just take breaks to walk around town with Poogie.

Wait, Poogie is definitely in this one, right?
