Sonos introduces the Beam Gen 2 probe with Dolby Atmos support

Last year, Sonos brought Dolby Atmos into the living rooms with its premium full-size sound bar, the Arc. Now the company’s most compact and affordable sound bar gets the premium 3D audio update. And in addition to Dolby Atmos support, the Sonos Beam Gen 2 comes with HDMI eARC, enhanced processing power with a new range of speakers and improved sound, a sleeker design, NFC for perfect setup, AirPlay 2 and much month.

Sonos detailed the Beam Gen 2 in a press release this morning:

Sonos today announced Beam (Gen 2), a new version of its industry-leading compact smart soundbar for TV, music, gaming and more. The new Beam offers an updated and more immersive sound experience with more depth and clarity, as well as support for Dolby Atmos.

Here are the features and benefits of Beam Gen 2:

  • 3D audio with Dolby Atmos: Immersive sound technology that puts you at the center of the action, whether you’re experiencing planes as if they were flying overhead, hearing footsteps moving around the room, or feeling the score around you.
  • Improved sound, the same size: With more processing power and a new range of phased speakers, Beam directs and locates sound in the room for a real experience. The speakerphone now also supports HDMI eARC on your TV, so you can experience your favorite movies and games with an even higher definition sound, with support for new audio formats.
  • Most elegant design: An updated and precisely perforated polycarbonate grille allows the speaker to sound great and blend in perfectly with your home, just like Sonos Arc.
  • Easier and more secure configuration: With just two cables and new NFC features, the setup is perfect and will make you listen in minutes. Simply open the Sonos app, follow some instructions, and tap your phone in Beam.
  • Sustainable sound: The new Beam features sustainable packaging, including premium uncoated kraft paper, a gift box made with 97% sustainable paper and no disposable foam.

The Beam Gen 2 also includes Sonos ’Trueplay smart equalizer, as well as AirPlay 2 support, making it a great choice for Apple users.

The Beam Gen 2 is available to pre-order starting today at $ 449, directly from Sonos and certain retailers with the new soundbar coming out October 5th.

Sonos also scoffed at bringing “Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Music later this year via Amazon Music.”

We expected the new Beam to work with Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio content from Apple Music, but Sonos confirmed to 9to5Mac that this is not the case for now. Fingers we will see Sonos partner with Apple in the near future.
