Horizon Forbidden West
Guerilla
Yesterday, Sony baffled both fans and critics when it announced the price of the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West.
While the $ 60 PS4 and $ 70 PS5 prices are Sony’s standard at the moment, the confusing part was that there was absolutely no way to upgrade the $ 60 PS4 version to a $ 60 version. PS5 later. Instead, players are told to buy a $ 80 “Deluxe” version that allows the “Right Right” for the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.
Fans haven’t exactly figured out Sony’s paid upgrade path for other games in the past, but the full missing of an upgrade path for Horizon Forbidden West is new. But not only is it illogical, but it’s completely contrary to what Sony explicitly said about the game.
A year ago, last September, Sony posted a post on the blog that is still online. It says the following:
“We also know that the PS4 community will move to PS5 at different times and we’re excited to announce PS4 versions of some of our exclusives. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure and Horizon Forbidden West will also be released on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-generation features, such as the high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch. He The PS4 digital versions of the release games include a free upgrade to both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade to the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive. “
There is simply no other way to read it. Sony originally said that upgrading your PS4 copy from Horizon Forbidden West to PS5 would be free.
But still, if you want to argue with the writing here, here’s Jim Ryan explicitly in an interview with the Washington Post at the same time when he was specifically asked about the intergenerational titles Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West:
“No one should be disappointed,” Ryan said. “The PS5 versions of these games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having options. I’m really happy with the situation. “

Miles Morales, despite some of its own confusing upgrades that contained updated versions of the original Spider-Man game, actually had a free upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 as a standalone game. Here’s how this process worked:
“You can simply browse to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Game Hub on the PS5 console and select the upgrade offer to download the PS5 version. Note: You will need to sign in to the PS5 console with the same PlayStation Network account that you used when you purchased the PS4 version of the game. “
So Horizon Forbidden West isn’t just implementing a totally confusing and absurd way for PS4 gamers to “pre-upgrade” their game at a higher price, even if it’s era a more standard $ 10 upgrade, that’s still not what they originally said. I have asked Sony for comments on this disparity and will update if I find out again.
Simply put, this is not what they promised. The scream about this move has been loud enough where I expect a response from them, so check back regularly if there are any updates I think are coming. Nothing less than a free upgrade, as they originally said, won’t be good enough, and if not, they have to explain why.
