FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts. – Footballer Roberto Aguayo, who has been out of the NFL for nearly three full seasons after entering the league as a pick for the second round of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, is trying to revive his career in the New England Patriots Training Squadron.
The club is scheduled to sign Aguayo on Saturday, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates.
Aguayo’s career took a dramatic turn after the Buccaneers selected him with the 59th overall selection in 2016. He was highly promoted as he left the state of Florida, having scored 198 points after attempts and 69 of 78 field goal attempts. He was the top scorer selected in the draft since the New York Jets caught Mike Nugent in the second round in 2005 (No. 47 overall).
Aguayo won 22 of 31 field goals as a rookie, struggling remarkably late in the season, and then the Buccaneers signed veteran Nick Folk in the offseason to compete for the best job. Folk won the job in the 2017 preseason; at the moment he is the kicker of the Patriots and in the heat of professional year to the 36 years.
Aguayo was claimed by the Chicago Bears in 2017, but released less than a month later and spent six weeks of the 2017 season on the Carolina Panthers training squad. He spent the low season and 2018 preseason with the Los Angeles Chargers, but was released at the end of the preseason and has been out of the league ever since.
In New England, Folk is a free agent after the season. The Patriots also have Justin Rohrwasser, coach of the fifth round of 2020, in their training squad, and the addition of Aguayo could be an indication that Rohrwasser’s development has not gone as well as the club imagined.
