TAMPA, Florida – Immediately after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV on Sunday, Bucs quarterback Tom Brady apologized to Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu for several verbal altercations over the terrain, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
ESPN read the contents of the letter aloud.
Brady apologized to Mathieu for losing his temper at the time of the game, of which Mathieu said, “I’ve never seen that side of him.”
During the game, Brady and Mathieu fought several times. At one point, Brady even chased him and put him in his face.
Brady called Mathieu the “top competitor” in his apology text and said he knew he needed to match Mathieu’s intensity on Sunday.
Brady told Mathieu that he had seen him since his days at LSU and praised Mathieu for his heart, calling him an “incredible leader, champion and class act.”
Brady also expressed his desire to apologize in person in the future. He said his outbursts at an emotional moment were by no means a reflection of his feelings towards Mathieu, whom he talked about a lot during the week before the match.
Mathieu explained his side of the altercation, saying in a deleted tweet since then that Brady started the verbal bite when he told Mathieu “something I will not repeat.”
“Sure he’s chasing me, but they pointed me out,” Mathieu said in another deleted tweet.
