Steam extends compatibility with Xbox and PS5 controllers

If, like me, you prefer to play your PC games with a controller archived from the home console, you’ll get good news. Steam is testing extended features for PS5 and Xbox controllers, including additional customization and button mapping. I’m still playing with a fairly old Xbox One controller, but hey, by the time I update, it looks like all the new features are ready and waiting for me when I connect one.

Earlier this week, Steam outlined some new features you can try if you switch to the Steam client’s beta branch. This time, Xbox controllers get the most out of it with the ability to reconnect the Xbox Series X controller share button and tie the sleek palettes on the back of the Elite controller to your driver settings.

They are also testing support for more than four Xbox controllers. I don’t know about you guys, but there are currently no more than four Xbox controllers or any creature cable that can handle them in my house. Maybe at the end of 2021, eh?

PS5 controllers now receive a small gesture with the option to enable or disable the gamepad LED light or only enable it when multiple controllers are connected. Steam also improved support for the PS5 controller late last year shortly after the launch of the new system.

There’s a little more to the Steam update about compatibility with the Wooting Two keyboard, HOTAS and G15 devices.

If you want to connect the whole family of Xbox drivers and see what happens, you can opt for the beta version in the account section of the Steam settings menu.
