ORCHARD PARK, New York: The Mike Tomlins who don’t like it, won’t like this one: the coaching staff played a major role in the Steelers who defeated the Bills 23-16 on Sunday at Highmark Stadium.
Yes, you read that right. The years of debates over the mismanagement of the clock, whether or not to kick field goals and make adjustments, have been Tomlin’s Achilles heel and his coaching staff over the years.
That wasn’t the case on Sunday, when many believed the Steelers were going to fly. Instead, he was one of Tomlin’s best coaching jobs in recent memory and goes beyond key billing for the Bills ’declines in the early fourth quarter, when they had a 10-6 lead.
It also had to do with being extremely patient as a coach in a tight match against a good team. Tomlin decided to try two short field goal shots from Chris Boswell, first with the score at 10-0 and then with the score at 10-3. It may not have been an appealing call, but it required discipline, especially when it comes to a quarterback like Josh Allen and an offense like Bills.
“When you play a good defense, those decisions are easier,” Tomlin said.
The coaching staff is in charge of exploiting a hole in the billing point team at the perfect time, with the plan to make wide receiver Stefon Diggs in control with players the average fan doesn’t know, playing corners.
