Steelers mourns the loss of 88-year-old Patricia Rooney

The Steelers announced the passage of Patricia Rooney on Saturday night. He was 88 years old.

Rooney, who died peacefully at home on Saturday, was the daughter of the late Mary Duffy Regan and Martin Regan originally from Co.Mayo, Ireland, beloved wife of the late Ambassador Daniel M. Rooney and devoted mother of Arthur J. Rooney. ll (Greta), Patricia R. Gerrero (Bob), dead Kathleen R. Miller (Thomas), dead Rita Rooney Conway, Daniel M. Rooney (Allison), Mary Duffy Regan, John T. Rooney (Emma), James E. Rooney (Stephanie) and Joan M. Clancy died (Chris), 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, along with numerous extended family. He is survived by his brother Martin Francis Regan, Evelyn R. O’Brien, Rita R. Heberle and Irene R. Hill. Her sisters Mary Regan, John Regan, Geraldine R. Glenn and brothers John Regan and Thomas Regan preceded her.

“My family and I mourn the passing of my mother, Patricia,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement released by the team Saturday night. “He helped raise nine children while supporting my father’s career with the Steelers and his time as ambassador to Ireland. It’s a sad day for our family.

“My mom meant a lot to not only all of us who were part of the family, but she dedicated a lot of her time and energy to helping those in need in the Pittsburgh community. It will leave a lasting impression on so many people and organizations in our area, especially the Salvation Army and many organizations on the north side of Pittsburgh, where my parents called home.

“We will celebrate her life and the memories we have of her during this difficult time for our family. We thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.”

Rooney was born on the north side of Pittsburgh and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. Due to precautions against COVID, funeral arrangements are private. A commemorative Mass will be scheduled at a later date. Commemorative contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, or to the charity the donor chooses. The family would also like to thank many caregivers who provided wonderful care.
