Some Americans will receive new coronavirus stimulus checks as early as this weekend, the White House said Thursday.
News from White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki came minutes after President Joe Biden signed the $ 1.9 trillion Covid aid bill.
“People can expect to start seeing direct deposits reach their bank accounts as early as this weekend,” Psaki said at a news conference.
“This is, of course, just the first wave,” Psaki noted, adding that “payments to eligible Americans will continue for the next few weeks.”
Beyond the billions of dollars in funding for vaccinations, state and local governments and other areas, the plan will send direct payments of up to $ 1,400 to most Americans.
It would also extend a $ 300 weekly unemployment insurance increase until Sept. 6 and extend the child tax credit for a year.

The massive bill, which most Americans support, passed Congress without the support of Republican lawmakers. The House and Senate led by Democrats pushed the bill through Congress through the budget conciliation process.
“This historic legislation is about rebuilding the backbone of this country,” Biden said before signing the legislation. “And to give the people of this nation, the working people, the middle class people, the people who built this country, a chance to fight.”
Biden on Thursday night will deliver his first first-class speech in the nation. He will talk about the bill and offer a precautionary optimistic view of the next steps in the fight against the pandemic.
“He plans to offer a clear outline of his approach, at the level of the American people on what is being asked of him, but also provide a sense of hope for what is possible,” Psaki said in the briefing.
The speech, scheduled to begin just after 8pm (ET), comes on the 50th day of Biden as president and on the one-year anniversary of the strict blockade measures imposed across the country to curb the transmission of the virus.
