Strong winds were blowing south of California; many appliances for electrical shutdowns

SAN BERNARDINO, California (KABC) – Santa Ana’s dangerous winds are moving south, causing a greater fire hazard, as thousands of them are threatened with power out.

Tuesday in Southern California will be affected by wind intensity, low relative humidity and low humidity, causing firefighters to be on alert.

A huge area is affected, from Santa Clarita to the high country, from the Los Angeles Basin to the Santa Monica Mountains and to the coast. At higher altitudes, gusts could reach up to 90 mph.

“Right now we’re under the gun,” said Roland Sprewell of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “We have an incessant fire season that seems like it doesn’t want to let go.”

In response, local firefighters are staffed. They send strike equipment to more risky places. They also restrict parking in areas of very high gravity to ensure that fire trucks have a place to park in the event of a fire.

In anticipation of extreme winds, Edison, in Southern California, is already turning off power to some of its customers.

The wind was already howling in the North Park neighborhood of San Bernardino on Monday afternoon, where residents are preparing another public safety cut.

“Now everyone buys generators, it’s a pretty normal thing,” James Garcia said.

“It’s not a good normalcy. Nothing is a good normalcy anymore,” Joe Lunt said.

Many of the neighbors have invested in power generators because of the frequency with which electricity is turned off during wind events.

“Today we made sure we had enough oil and gas to make sure the generator could run for 25 to 30 hours. The maximum we’ve been off is 28 hours,” said Mary Beth Norris.

Norris says his big concern is his big neighbors.

“What frightens me frankly are the people who are in the oxygen machines, they have no way to keep it running once the battery is put in the oxygen machine.”

Potentially, more than 32,000 Southern California Edison customers in San Bernardino County could see disruptions over the next two days.

In Ventura County, more than 113,000 customers were prepared for a possible outage.

“Very strong and damaging winds are expected Monday morning and Wednesday morning, and with no rain in the last four weeks, strong winds and high temperatures are expected to lead to a high risk of forest fires,” Ron Gales said with Southern California Edison.

In Anaheim, strong winds prompted officials to close the massive COVID-19 vaccination site at Disneyland on Tuesday. Appointments for Tuesday will be rescheduled for another day, according to city officials in Anaheim.
