“Evening, Tom,” he emails Matt Dony. “I don’t tend to follow American football, but I love watching almost any sport when it’s played well. Most years, I’m alert and watch the Super Bowl (or, mostly, anyway) because it’s an “event”. This year, however, coincides uncomfortably with an English cricket match that is broadcast on terrestrial television from early in the morning in the UK. So my dilemma is: do I stay awake until I see this? Or go to bed and get up early to see the grill? I’m really run over … ”
Hmmmm. I would probably see them both and sleep until tomorrow.

Raymond James Stadium will occupy one-third of its capacity today, with one-third of the tickets given to health workers to recognize their tireless and vital work during the pandemic.

Unlike the stadium, Tampa’s bars will be full today, despite the pandemic. They will be allowed to operate at 100% capacity, as long as customers are seated and masked. You can read more about the city’s preparations for the game here:

The Buccaneers today have the home field advantage and the most successful quarterback of all time, but they face a terribly dangerous offense, arguably led by the most talented NFL player of all time. How do they win? Our writers think:
Shorten the game. The Bucs have shown they can switch between different styles this season. They can win with their exceptional defense. They can trust Tom Brady to take part in a shooting. Against the Chiefs, while not as entertaining, they will have to rely on the race to extend the units against a weak Chiefs front to contain the score. Get Brady to the final unit with a chance to win the game, that should be the plan. Oliver Connolly
Sic Jason Pierre-Paul, William Gholston and Ndamukong Suh on the Chiefs’ backup attacks. Mix it a little on the first down. (Transfers to Leonard Fournette & Co are so predictable.) And they take every opportunity to connect with the receivers on the lower field, a point of emphasis for Bruce Arians all season. If Antonio Brown is looking for a moment to shine, that’s it. Andrew Lawrence
Brady doesn’t want to get into a pitching contest with Muhammad at this point in his career. Their advantage lies in their experience. You don’t want to be a pure game manager here, you’ll have to connect with some long balls to win, but if you focus on making the right play to try to make the big play, your team has a solid chance. Hunter felt
Tampa has to play to the fullest and blinking early and often. They have the pedigree (nine sacks and two wins against Rodgers this season) and can stop Muhammad by attacking an offensive line that is missing in his first attacks. You run the risk of death by a thousand cuts in the form of Tyreek and Travis, but Todd Bowles must be brave to limit Kansas City’s score. Graham Searles

Little-known 576-year-old quarterback Tom Brady it starts today for the Buccaneers, so we asked another Hall of Fame, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to write about how to play at 40 (well, Brady is 43). Here are the fantastic results:
“I was 42 when I retired from the Lakers. After 20 seasons, he had many NBA records and had very little hair. Some of these records have been broken since then, some remain to be broken at some point to decide. I learned a few lessons about being a middle-aged athlete in a league where the average age is 26, which is also the average NFL player’s age. Some of these lessons were about playing, others were players, two very different things.
“Playing professionally against well-trained athletes 20 years younger is a challenge. The track looks much longer, the legs look heavier, the hoop looks smaller. That’s when you come face to face with what philosophers call the mind-body problem: the relationship between the consciousness of the mind and the stubborn bag of flesh that is your body.

Joe Biden has been interviewed by CBS about the Super Bowl. The president is asked if he thinks we will be able to watch next year’s match in front of a full stadium.
“It is my hope and expectation … that we can see the Super Bowl with a full stadium [in 2022]. He also advises people not to face the Super Bowl festivities this year: “If you’re watching, be careful,” he says.
He is also asked if he would rather be thrown by Muhammad or Brady (Biden was a receiver in the past). He opts for Muhammad who, he points out, has a certain “potential,” a slight understatement. Then Biden remembers being a politician and says they are “both great quarterbacks.” A change from his predecessor, who would probably have nominated himself as the best player of all time.

The buildup of this game has been overshadowed by something horrible traffic accident with head coach Britts Reid which left a child in a serious condition. And the latest news is not good:
Jason La Canfora
(@JasonLaCanfora)Kansas City police tell me the five-year-old boy who was injured when his car was hit by head coach Britt Reid remains in critical condition in hospital with a brain injury
Britt Reid is the son of head coach Andy Reid, so who knows how he should feel right now (and that’s before he gets into the injured kid’s parents).
Britt Reid is also in the hospital with unspecified injuries and, according to a police report, said she had drunk two or three drinks on the evening of the crash.

Do you miss the day when players could smoke on the sidelines? (LEGAL NOTE: The Guardian does not allow smoking, even those with little tar.) Then take a look at our gallery of past Super Bowls (also includes the Giants dressed as Shirley Temple, which is as terrifying as it sounds):

Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce has appeared on CBS and talked about its offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy.
“I think it’s a disrespect that I haven’t yet found a coaching job,” Kelce said. “But I’ll get the advantage of being here every year and we’ll keep doing the Super Bowl as long as we have it.”
Bieniemy has been one of the brains of one of the most explosive crimes in NFL history. And yet, despite the lack of one-color coaches in a league where most players are black, Bieniemy has been unable to find a head coach job while MANY guys who look like Sean McVay are in charge of the teams.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is asked about the lack of black NFL coaches. He claims to take the issue “very seriously” and admits the league “didn’t go as well as we wanted”. It’s easy to blame Goodell and the league office, and the commissioner has a lot to blame. – But the fact is that white billionaires who own NFL teams are the ones who choose not to hire black coaches.

Hello and welcome to the coverage of [checks Roman numerals] Super Bowl 55, between the reigning Kansas City Chiefs champion and the hometown of Tampa Bay Buccaneers (the first team to play its own stadium in Super Bowl history). Normally, Guardian would be at the stadium, but with this year’s pandemic, the NFL could only promise us a desk in the media center of the stadium parking lot, so we’ll also be in front of the TV. No matter, let’s be honest, the NFL is better on TV than live anyway.
The most obvious question is: who will win? Four of our writers said theirs and their thoughts are as follows:
Chapters 31-24 Buccaneers. The combination of Brady and Bowles is as good as you can expect to try to drop the heads of your hanger. No one is able to stop heads, but all Bucs need is a defense that slows down the Muhammad-Andy Reid machine, even for a possession or two. Tampa has the talent and staff to be able to carry out this plan. I have the Bucs giving Brady a chance at the final possession, but they get little. The Chiefs ’offensive power, even with all the goodness of the Bowles, is too overwhelming. And even when plays are broken down, no one is better than Muhammad. The Chiefs turn their backs and Muhammad takes a second successive MVP. Oliver Connolly
Chapters 30-29 Buccaneers. As exposed as the figures of Muhammad standing on the edge, one could easily see Bucs ’defense forgetting the wheels of the QB until it was too late. Whether it’s taking a piece of the garden or buying time to throw darts at Cheetah & Co, the Muhammad will finally take heart. Andrew Lawrence
Chapters 34-17 Buccaneers. Look for teams to keep him close for a while, but in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs will have the lead and make him jump with one of those Muhammad outbursts, where two touchdowns will occur in the blink of an eye. Hunter felt
Chapters 30-33 Buccaneers. I said it halfway through the season and I’ll say it again: Tom Brady and the Bucs will win the Super Bowl. Choosing against Brady is a fool’s errand, especially now that it’s a must. Six titles and your team not being a favorite is a testament to how good the Chiefs are, but Brady will have the final say in the game with last-minute driving and possibly QB being really the biggest . Same time next year, Tom. Graham Searles
