For the past 20 years, Joe Deciccio has been working the shop window of a South Daytona store, handing out friendly smiles and congratulations along with food orders.
When a Facebook group was set up to highlight restaurant workers during the pandemic, the employee known as Taco Bell Joe won by defeat.
An initial $ 50 gift soon increased to thousands as donations were poured.
He was recently presented with a check for more than $ 6,000.
“I owe this to my clients. They bring out the best in me. It’s them. I couldn’t do it without your help,” Deciccio said. “And I’ll do my best to live up to it. And light a light, a little candle in every heart of every person I know.”
Raj Gohill was one of those who contributed to Deciccio’s tip.
“You could have the worst day, when you walk by, you’re just smiling,” Gohill said.
Taco Bell Joe said he never realized how many people he has played, but his clients give him strength and wisdom.
