Taliban give more strength to Afghan Panjshir with killings and food control: report

KABUL: The Taliban have imposed a blockade on Panjshir province in Afghanistan, denying food to residents and carrying out some extrajudicial killings, the Washington Post reported.
On Tuesday, the Taliban formed the interim “Islamic Emirate”, naming the forts, who oversaw the 20-year struggle against the US-led military coalition in its new government.
The new government is dominated by members of the group’s old guard, not including women. Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund has been appointed Prime Minister with two deputies Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Molavi Abdul Salam Hanafi.
Meanwhile, the Panjshir Resistance Front has vowed to declare a parallel government in Afghanistan, even when the Taliban recently announced their “interim government” in the country. Although the Taliban have taken control of Panjshir this week, there are still sporadic clashes in the valley.
A tribal elder who recently fled the province told The Post that the Taliban are carrying out some extrajudicial executions of civilians and that the list of abuses committed by the group is growing.
The former Afghan said his people pressured him to leave the area after the Taliban alerted his family. “The eight civilians killed in Panjshir three days earlier were not in favor of the resistance or the Taliban,” he said.
Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Panjshir Valley, former Afghanistan Vice President Amrullah Saleh called on the UN last week to do everything possible to prevent the Taliban attack on the resistance stronghold.
In a letter to the United Nations, Saleh sounded the alarm on the situation in Panjshir and said a large-scale humanitarian crisis was taking place across Panjshir province and three districts of Andrabs in Baghlan province. due to the economic blockade and the shutdown of the Taliban’s telecommunications.
“We call on the United Nations and the international community to do their utmost to prevent the Taliban attack on Panjshir province and to encourage them to negotiate a political solution to ensure the salvation of thousands of displaced and hostile civilians.” , Saleh had said.
Taliban and opposition forces fought to control the Panjshir Valley north of Kabul, the last Afghan province to hold the group. Saleh, along with Ahmad Massoud (son of the famous Afghan commander Ahmad Shah Massoud), another resistance leader, is still trying to challenge the Taliban.
