Texas coronavirus deaths exceed 200 on Saturdays as hospitalizations decline

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – The death toll in Texas from coronavirus disease rose more than 200 on Saturday, while the number of people hospitalized with the virus declined, according to the Texas State Department of Health Services.

The department reported that there were 227 additional deaths from COVID-19, more than 4,900 new cases and 7,535 hospitalizations.

Texas has had more than 2.5 million cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began and more than 42,000 deaths from COVID-19, the third-highest death toll in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The seven-day average of new cases has dropped from nearly 18,980 a day to nearly 5,041 and the average daily death had dropped from 305.7 a day to 127.3, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Over the past two weeks, the rotating average of new daily cases in Texas has fallen by 13,849.3, a drop of 74.7%, according to Johns Hopkins figures.
