Texas Democrat says “deadly consequences” will come from state abortion bill

Rep. Veronica EscobarVeronica Escobar Sunday shows the preview: States deal with the consequences of Ida; Texas abortion law goes into effect House court advances defense law 8B House committee proposes to block private funds for National Guard deployments MORE (D-Texas) on Sunday said there will be “deadly consequences” of the abortion bill that went into effect in its home state last week, which bans abortions only for six weeks. of pregnancy.

“There are also other real-life consequences that are happening right now, deadly consequences,” Escobar told guest host Weijia Jiang on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“There are people who want to believe that abortion can be eliminated, but what this law and other similar laws will do is make it more deadly and more dangerous. Women will take their health into their own hands, it will affect young women, poor women and women of color, and I am really afraid of the lives that will be lost as a result, ”she added.

The controversial Texas bill went into effect Wednesday at midnight, and prohibits abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur as early as six weeks of pregnancy.

The legislation also allows private citizens to sue abortion providers if they believe they are violating the new policy.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court declined to block Texas law, known by some as the “fetal heartbeat law,” leaving in place the country’s most restrictive abortion measure.

Escobar also told CBS that no law can eliminate abortion, but that restrictions in Texas remove access to a “legal and safe abortion.”

“I say there is no law that can create that eliminates abortion, all that happens is that you eliminate legal and safe abortion, causing significant harm to women,” she said.
